Packing fragile items

How to Pack Fragile Items for a Sydney or Interstate Move

Pack fragile items in sound boxes with suitable cushioning, wrap pieces individually and prevent movement inside the box. Keep weight manageable and label fragile cartons clearly. Artwork, large mirrors, valuable pieces and electronics may need different protection, so discuss their requirements with your removalist before packing or booking transport.

Which materials should I use?

Choose boxes suited to the weight and type of contents. Use clean packing paper, appropriate cushioning and strong packing tape. A damaged carton or loosely secured base can undermine otherwise careful packing.

Do not rely on a fragile label to compensate for inadequate protection. The contents should be stable inside the carton during ordinary handling. Keep heavy objects away from delicate pieces and avoid boxes that are too heavy to handle comfortably.

How should I pack glasses and crockery?

Wrap pieces individually and cushion the bottom of the box. Separate items so hard surfaces do not knock together, and fill gaps without forcing pressure onto delicate parts.

Use smaller cartons for heavier contents rather than putting an entire kitchen cupboard into one large box. Close and secure each carton properly. Label the contents, destination room and any handling orientation needed.

What about mirrors and artwork?

Different frames, glazing and surfaces need different materials. Loose coverings may not provide enough protection for a large mirror, and some materials can mark a delicate artwork.

Photograph the item and tell your removalist its dimensions, construction and any particular concerns. Ask whether specialist packaging is needed and who will provide it. Discuss high-value or irreplaceable items separately before agreeing to move them.

How should I prepare televisions and electronics?

Check the manufacturer’s instructions and use suitable original packaging where available and in good condition. Protect screens against impact and pressure. Keep labelled cables and accessories together so reconnecting equipment is easier.

Back up important files before moving computers. Photograph cable connections if helpful, and carry essential personal data and small valuables with you. Ask for advice if you do not have packaging suited to a large screen.

Should I use professional packing?

Professional packing can help when time is limited, a household has many delicate items or the move involves storage and multiple handling stages. Agree which rooms or items need packing, whether materials are included and who will unpack them.

Red Fox offers packing and unpacking options. Discuss the required work before moving day rather than assuming packing is included in transport pricing.
