Interstate moving timelines
How to Plan Your Interstate Moving Timeline
Plan an interstate move around three separate events: leaving the old property, transporting your belongings and gaining access to the new home. Confirm collection and delivery dates or windows with your removalist before coordinating travel. Allow for essentials, accommodation and a storage option if property or transport dates do not align.
Start with the dates you cannot change
Write down your move-out deadline, key handover or settlement arrangements and the earliest time you can receive furniture. Distinguish confirmed dates from expectations.
Tell your removalist about building lift bookings, restricted delivery hours and any period when no one will be available to receive the shipment. These requirements influence whether a proposed transport schedule suits the move.

Separate collection from delivery
An interstate collection date is not a promise of same-day delivery. Ask when collection will occur, how the delivery window is determined and when you should expect an update.
Clarify whether the proposed timing is an estimate or an agreed booking commitment. Avoid booking a short lift slot or arranging help at the destination based only on an assumed arrival time.
Plan your own journey and essentials
Carry identification, keys, medication, valuables and important documents yourself. Pack enough clothing, toiletries, chargers and other essentials for the expected gap, with some allowance for changes.
If you will arrive before the furniture, consider bedding, meals and somewhere suitable to stay. Make separate arrangements for pets and children so their needs do not depend on the truck arriving at a particular hour.

Confirm the shipment before collection
Review the inventory and report additions before moving day. Agree the packing responsibilities, furniture preparation and any special handling. Complete the agreed preparation so the team can begin work without avoidable delays.
Check access at both addresses again shortly before collection. A changed delivery address, unavailable lift or unfinished driveway can affect the plan even after transport has been arranged.
Have a plan if the new home is delayed
Ask about storage before you need it. Confirm availability, charges, handling and redelivery notice. If settlement or renovation timing is uncertain, explain that at the quoting stage.
Use our storage between moves guide to prepare the questions. A contingency works best when everyone understands who will contact whom and when a new delivery booking will be made.
What should I check at delivery?
Have an authorised person available, with keys and building access ready. Use your inventory to check the shipment and direct items to the correct rooms. Raise visible concerns promptly and ask about the procedure for anything discovered after unpacking.
